How to get out of a Clothes Rut
I was in the same place you must be in right now. Do you feel like you are wearing the same clothes over and over again? Well, I needed a change. I wanted a fresh revamp of my wardrobe. But there was no way I could afford a whole new wardrobe.

I still love the clothes I have. I just need a different way of putting my clothes together. That’s when I came across the term Capsule Wardrobe. I kinda knew what it meant but I researched it a little more. This is what happens when you come across a pandemic? You have too much free time on your hands. Lol. But I’m so glad I did.
So, what is a capsule wardrobe you ask . . .
What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
It is a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that will mix and match with each other.
This idea was popularised by American designer Donna Karan, who, in 1985, released an influential capsule collection of seven interchangeable work-wear pieces.
You will need no more than 25 items of tops, blouses, skirts, trousers, jackets, sweaters and perhaps a dress that can be worn casual or for work attire. And of course accessorize it with pumps, sandals, block heels and of course jewelry.
The items you choose should be able to be augmented with seasonal pieces. So by no means do you get rid of the items you already have. Do a deep dive into your closet and do some shopping. I will show you how I started my capsule wardrobe.
I’m sure you already have some of the items already
5 Steps to Creating the Perfect Capsule Wardrobe:
1. Study the clothes in your Closet – you will have to start purging some of the items in your closet. You want to start with a clean slate. Now that does NOT mean to get rid of everything. I’m sure you have a lot of valuable items.
But on the other hand, you must have a lot of items that you probably haven’t worn for months, or the items are old and raggedy, or they still have a tag on and hoping that someday it might fit (that’s one of my items lol)
2. Devise a Plan when to start – plan a day, maybe a weekend, when you are free from any potential interferences. A day that is most convenient for you.
Come up with the day and time you want to start organizing your closet. Leave yourself plenty of time to do this. This entails taking everything out of your closet.
3. Purging Your Closet – once you have all your clothes out of the closet you can start dividing your clothes. Get yourself either boxes, Tupperware or garbage bags (for donating or throwing out) and labels.
I did something like this when I planned out my garage sale a few years ago. I organized everything into piles so it made everything much easier to handle.
4. Start Dividing – so you have everything out of your closet; your boxes or Tupperware or garbage bags on the floor; labels on the containers; all your clothes are laid out on your bed. Now you are ready to start dividing your clothes.
So, you start going through your clothes one item at a time and really think if you will still wear the item again. Think to yourself if it’s still a valuable item for your new wardrobe collection. Most bottom pieces are still good if it’s still trendy in today’s fashion.
Now, the tops like blouses and t-shirts get a little bit more worn-looking. When the item is washed so many times, it begins to lose it’s vibrancy and quality. Take a look at it. If that’s the case you know it’s time to get rid of it and replace with something new.
For example, white shirts when washed over and over again, they lose their quality and colour. They become stained-looking from deoderent, perfume, makeup, etc. Tshirts/blouses/shirts don’t cost a lot. It’s time to replace.
5. Ready to start your new Wardrobe – now that you have your clothes organized into your different piles, you are ready to start putting the items back into your closet. Remember the items you still have and the items you need to replace.
I created a neat spreadsheet you can use to tick off the items you need to replace or buy for your new collection. You know me . . . I love creating worksheets and spreadsheets for everything LOL.

Capsule Wardrobe Basics
When creating a capsule wardrobe you want to keep it simple. Don’t go looking for anything expensive. I checked out a lot of things online and found a lot of good sales. There were so many staple items that I found.
This means clothing items that you can wear with a variety of items you already have. You want to have a wardrobe that will give you multiple outfits to last you an entire month. Yes an entire month.
What a concept right? Our clothes were right under our noses. We see our closet every day right? But do we really? Well, now we will am I right?
I have also created a little chart you can follow about the basic items you will need for your capsule wardrobe.
Here is a sample outfit that I put together with some items I already had in my closet. I just had to buy the t-shirt to add a little fun and variety to a simple outfit.
* Simple print shirt or just plain white
* Black pants/Black capri
* Red sweater
* Red shoes
* Black Handbag
* Paid cute red earrings
* Gold or Silver bangles
