10 Tips To Help You Get Started
Are you ready for Christmas? Christmas is my favorite time of the year. As soon as Halloween is over, my daughter starts to play Christmas carols day and night. We start getting the Christmas decorations out of storage and start decorating the house, inside and out. It’s our Christmas Tradition.

Christmas: The Best Time of The Year
Even though my children are older, Christmas is still an exciting time of the year for them. But when the kids were younger, we did everything possible to instill a tradition in our family. We committed to do everything together from the getgo.
When I got married, I moved down south to Toronto. We would always travel up north for Christmas. Although traveling up north in the bad snowy weather was not always the greatest, we never missed going up for the holidays.
Your First Born and The Holidays
When my son was born, we wanted to make his first Christmas a special one. I knew there was one tradition I wanted to start. And that was to take family Christmas photos. I put my camera on my tripod, set the timer and ran back to the scene quickly and tried to smile naturally. Lol!!
STARTING A CHRISTMAS TRADITION
What tradition do you plan to start with your newborn? Christmas is the perfect place to start. Perhaps you can choose a few from my list below:
Taking photos at Christmas with your new family is a perfect way to start a tradition. We would take a number of different poses. We would print out a few of the best ones and make a number of copies We would include them in our Christmas cards to friends and family. One year we framed one of our family portraits and gave it to my Grandmother as a Christmas gift.
Wouldn’t it be fun to buy matching pj’s for the family to take Christmas photos in. Or just wear them while opening Christmas gifts in the morning. My daughter and I were actually looking into getting these matching pj’s for our family Christmas photoshoot. We’ll see if we can convince my son and husband. Lol!!
Photos with Santa
We did this too. I couldn’t wait to experience taking photos with Santa. When our son and later my daughter were old enough we took them to see Santa. My son was a little resistant at first but my daughter was pretty good. It’s so fun experiencing little kids taking photos with Santa.
You cannot forget about the traditional Christmas stockings. You can get them personalized with your baby’s name on it. My mom bought two huge stockings for my kids with a snowman embellishment on one and a Santa on the other. We still use them to this day, so many years later.
Christmas Tree Decorating
When the kids get a little older, make a tradition of decorating the Christmas Tree all together. We picked a day and we got together and brought up all the decorations from the basement and went to town. It was a long process. But super fun. We put on some Christmas music, sang along and decorated the tree. Still to this day, we put up the Christmas tree together and put on the Christmas tunes.
Elf On A Shelf
Getting “Elf On A Shelf” could be beneficial for the parent just as much as it is for your child. When you have “Elf on a Shelf” you have to be diligent and explain to your child how they have to be good by listening more. The elf will report back to Santa. Worked with my daughter. I wish it was around when my son was young. Lol!!
Cookies For Santa
Every year for the longest time, we told our daughter that we have to make cookies for Santa when he brings her gift. So, before we went to midnight mass, our daughter put out a plate of cookies and milk for Santa. And what do you know . . . Santa came and left her a huge gift and ate all the cookies and drank his milk and even left her a really heartfelt letter. Hmmm !! Lol.
Going to midnight mass has been a tradition of mine since I was a young girl. I only missed midnight mass maybe a couple of times because I was sick. We even took our children when they were babies. They mostly slept. Like I said we took them everywhere with us. We dressed them in Santa outfits. They were so cute.
Opening up Christmas gifts after midnight mass has been a tradition of mine since I was very young. So, I created this tradition for my family. We would go to midnight mass, wherever we were, and open our gifts when we came home.
When the kids were younger, we would watch all the Christmas shows when they came on tv. We would also watch all the Christmas movies. We still watch them today. We can’t wait for all the traditional Christmas movies like these:
There are so many more. I love them all. I could watch them over and over again. They never get old.
So these are some of the traditions we have in our family. I would love to hear in the comments some of your traditions or maybe you would like to start one of mine that I listed. Send me a quick line on how you spend your Christmas. Would love to hear from you.
