More and more people are starting to really pay attention to what they put in their bodies for health reasons. However, did you know that what you eat – or don’t eat – can also help keep you from looking and feeling older?
negative effects of sugar
Sugar is one of the biggest culprits for having negative effects on your body. Not only does sugar make you gain extra weight, but it also slows down metabolism in your body so you are just too tired at the end of the day to do anything at all – let alone exercise. It can also clog up your arteries making you more prone to heart disease, strokes, and high blood pressure.
Sugar also has an effect on your brain – which is why you have that sweet tooth in the middle of the afternoon. Your brain wants that fix and plain old fruit doesn’t seem to make it happy. If you do have to give in to it, just eat a small square of dark chocolate. It’s much better for you and will knock out that sugar craving.
Your skin is also hugely affected when you consume a lot of sugar. Believe it or not, eating too much sugar can remove the elastin and collagen in your skin which will cause it to look saggy and older. It is also a contributing factor of breakouts on your skin – making you appear older than you are.
If you already have diabetes then eating too much sugar can cause tremendous damage to your kidneys. Your kidneys work to filter out the sugar coming through your system so consuming too much sugar will not allow your kidneys to work like they should, thus you’ll end up with damaged kidneys and in severe cases, kidney failure.
Do you suffer from joint pain? If you do, eating a lot of sugar can make it worse. The reason is that sugar causes inflammation, which in turn makes your already inflamed, painful joints hurt more.
Bad for teeth
Yes, we all heard it as a child, but it is really true. Sugar is bad for your teeth. The sugar sticks to your teeth are loved by the bacteria hanging around in your mouth so it feeds on the sugar left inside your mouth after that morning pastry.
Have you ever just been sitting around mid-afternoon and what something that can boost your energy and you dive right for the candy dish on your desk or in the cabinet just so you can get that sugar high? If so, you aren’t the only one.
Most of us feel our energy start to drain around that time of day and there is nothing better than having something sweet to give us that pick-me-up. But, it’s best to let that alone and go for a sweet piece of fruit instead.
Your body will get the added energy it needs to get you through the rest of the afternoon and you’ll have dodged the chocolate bar routine – and it will end up becoming your routine if you let it. Find other ways to boost your mood and your energy – a brisk walk around the building – rather than depending on sweets to be your go-to answer.
beware: sugar is everywhere
Not only are the obvious doughnuts, candy bars, and cookies something you need to watch when you eat them, but buyer beware that sugar shows up in almost every type of condiment out there – salad dressing, barbeque sauce, and ketchup. And those protein bars, are generally packed with sugar. It just sneaks up on you and before you know it you’ve consumed more than the daily allowance of sugar for the day.
