How To Create A Charming Little Vegetable Garden
Don’t you love this time of the year when everything begins to flourish? Everyone is out at garden nurseries all over the city, looking for flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetables. It’s nice to see large back yards with beautiful flower beds and garden full of various vegetables and even fruit trees. If you have a smaller back yard, as we do, you can still achieve a charming and beautiful garden of flowers and vegetables.
Creating any kind of garden you need a few supplies and a plan.
- Good soil
- mini shovel
- Sponge pad/knee pads
- garden gloves
You should have a plan as to what you want in your garden. Figure out if you want to have only trees, shrubs, and flower beds or all vegetable garden. For our garden (as you will see), my husband and I decided to only plant a few different vegetables this year. Normally we would plant flowers and vegetables.
We don’t have a huge back yard but we wanted the best of both worlds and there is nothing stopping you from having both no matter how small your space is. If you decide to have both and you have a small space, you could plant your vegetables and plant pretty flowers in various ceramic planters.
I say you need a plan because you don’t want to buy too much. You need to leave space between each plant. In no time the plants will grow a lot. If you are like my husband, a perfectionist, you can see here how he measures where he is going to place each plant. Normally I do the planting each year and I do a pretty good job spacing but since I was the photographer this year, I let him take care of the planting. You don’t have to be this organized but I let him have his fun 🙂
Vegetables We Planted:
We plant the same kind of vegetables every year. For our family, it’s the main vegetables at our dinner table.
- Tomatoes – never disappoints. Always has an abundance of tomatoes every year. Can’t go wrong
- Swiss Chard – does not disappoint. Produced a lot.
- Lettuce – we bought 2 different kinds and you could never go wrong with lettuce
- Cucumber – we bought 2 different kinds as well. Delicious.
- Parsley – very substantial amount produced
- Basil – this could sometimes be a hit or miss depending on the weather.
The final necessity of a beautiful garden is tender loving care, giving it enough water and sun and lots of prayer 🙂
I will be back with an update and show you all how our garden is doing.
Good Luck with your gardens. If you have any concerns or questions please drop a line. I would be more than happy to help with any questions.
